Urban Myth has it that London Taxis still have to carry a bale of hay in their boot to be legal.

John Thomas of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association says, the law did exist at one time but it is not a requirement any more -  it was finally removed from the law books in 1976.

In the 1800's cabbies drove horse-drawn carriages. The London Hackney Carriage Act made it illegal for drivers to feed their horse, unless it was from a bag or corn or hay from their hands. Presumably this was to prevent  traffic jams in the street whilst they refuelled. Or, maybe it was to stop the horse nibbling at peoples front gardens?!  Drivers must have had to have a handy stack of hay available on board at all times to meet their horses needs!

With the recent petrol pump crisis, it makes you wonder if being a taxi driver was easier back then?

Carnival Corporation,  owners of Cunard, P&O  & Princess Cruises whose headquarters are based in Southampton, have announced they are to invest in refitting many of their cruise liners.

Carnival Destiny, is to have the largest upgrade and will be renamed Carnival Sunshine when it sails on a 12 day Mediterranean cruise next Spring, 2013.

Carnival Spirit, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Dream, Carnival Splendour and Carnival Glory will also have extensive makeovers, giving a great boost to the Southampton Cruise trade.

The London Vintage Taxi Association has been invited to take part in the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

The association which was set up 30 years ago to bring together people interested in retired London-type purpose built taxicabs, have been asked to provide 30 vintage taxis to take part in this prestigious event.

Many of the members of the LVTA own, restore and preserve historic London taxis, and according to their website, the oldest dates from Edwardian times, however most members own traditional taxis from the 1930's - 1980's.

The Southampton Hackney Association send our congratulations to the LVTA, and look forward to watching the event which takes place on the 12th August 2012.

The Southampton Hackney Association here to spread the news about Southampton's White Hackney Carriage Taxi's!

During the school holidays it's always good to get out and about with the kids. Why not use a White Hackney Taxi to get you home after your shopping trip, or from A to B in the city?

With Valentines Day just 6 days way, you may be planning a romantic evening out or even a wedding proposal!

Whatever your plans it's worth taking a taxi to ensure you are able to celebrate in style.

Why not hail and ride one of the many white taxis you see in and around the city on your special evening, to get you home safely?

Though do spare a thought for the taxi drivers' partners left at home, whilst they are working their socks off on Valentines Day...awww!

Major improvements are currently taking place at the Southampton Central Train Station. As a temporary measure the taxi ranks have been relocated to allow for improvements to the station forecourt.

The changes will take effect from the 6th February and stay in force for 10 weeks, taxi drivers are asked to use the temporary rank during this period.
