Southampton is a place flooded with maritime history, people have sailed to and from this great city for thousands of years. The Titanic sailed from Southampton on it's historic maiden voyage, along with many, many other famous ships. Today millions of people pass through Southampton as they meet cruise ships for their holidays.
Why not take a taxi to visit the new Sea City Museum in Southampton and find out all about our fascinating maritime heritage?
You can find Southampton's white taxis at the cruise terminal, and at taxi ranks all around the city including the newly created QE2 mile (another place to visit whilst in the city!) Or simply hail and ride one of the white taxi cabs you will see in and around Southampton.
The SHA have recently come across a great new website which contains the stories of the people from Southampton who fought and died in the First and Second World Wars.
Designed and created by Southampton Solent University students in collaboration with the Families and Friends Group, the site aims to create an interactive website that gives famililes, schools, students, and local researchers the chance to contribute to the stories and history of those named on the cenotaph.
The site includes an alphabetical list of those named on the cenotaph and some background information about them, take a look here.
If you are in Southampton and would like to locate the cenotaph, do ask a Southampton Hackney Carriage Taxi driver, they will be pleased to help.
We receive about 5 telephone calls every week from people who have lost their property in white Southampton taxis, particularly mobile phones as they can easily slip out of pockets as you sit down.
It is worthwhile always checking you have all your belongings as you leave a taxi, as lost items are very difficult to trace with a very large number of taxis operating in the city at any one time.
Did you know that whether you use a White Saloon Taxi or a Large Multi-Seater Hackney Style White Cab in Southampton the price is exactly the same?
The only time an extra charge is made is if there are over 5 people travelling in the same car, and then it is a very low £2 extra cost.
It is a complete myth that if you get in a Large Taxi the driver will charge more for just one or two people using it.

Large or Small the Taxi fare is just the same, so always feel free to hop in the first taxi you see at the Taxi rank!

This BBC video narrated by Andrew Marr, shows the GPS trails of 380 London Taxis over the course of one day.
Like a piece of Modern Art, this visually arresting video shows the peaks and troughs of London's traffic from dawn and right the way through the night.
I wonder what Southampton City Centre would look like if we were able to do the same thing?
What are you getting up to this bank holiday weekend?

Since the launch of the Southampton Hackney Association website last August, we have had 6850 page views! This is a great achievement for our member drivers since it puts the white taxis of Southampton on the map, and helps to promote the Hackney Carriage trade in the city - this is our overall aim for the website.
On average each of our website visitors browses for over 2 minutes on the site, and takes a look at around 3 pages. We can see that 'our partners' page is one of the most visited on the site, so a great opportunity to showcase your business at a very low cost.
If you are a SHA member and would like to showcase your own taxi firm on the site, give us a call on 02380 659011, other businesses related to the motor trade may benefit from advertising with us, along with hotels and bed and breakfasts to name but few. Take a look at our partners page now, and see how this advertising might work for you.
