Herbert Walker Avenue Southampton

Did you know - that Herbert Walker Avenue is named after Sir Herbert Walker, the Chairman of the then Southern Railways, who once owned Southampton Docks?

The Avenue starts from the 1st exit off the Roundabout at West Quay Road & Town Quay, goes through Gate 8 and continues all the way to the King George 5th dry dock.  It is only accessible for dock traffic and passengers to the cruise terminals.

In 1927 when the trade in the Port was increasing, there was a need to extend the dockside quays as far as possible.  Sir Herbert had an ambitious scheme to make improvements by reclaiming land between The Royal Pier and Millbrook Point.  An area of approximately 400 acres of mud was pumped dry enabling concrete and steel piling which provided 1.5 miles of deep water berths.

If he could see now the overall development of Southampton Docks, he would be greatly impressed!

Southampton University Students look out for our White Taxis!

Southampton is getting busier by the day (and evening!) with the annual influx of students joining their university and college courses.

With so many nightclubs, restaurants and cinemas to visit in the city centre it is great to know that students can safely jump into a White Hackney Carriage Taxi by hailing them at the roadside, or by locating them at one of the many taxi ranks in the city.

Our white taxis are easily recognised around the centre of Southampton - look for the white taxi sign on the roof, and the red Hackney Carriage licence plate on the back of the vehicle.

You can be assured of your safety in a Hackney Carriage Taxi - all our drivers are insured to pick up passengers from the roadside, and are licensed, regulated and CRB checked by Southampton City Council. Most of the drivers also hold qualifications in transporting passsengers by taxi.

Additionally, for your security nearly all Southampton Hackney taxis have CCTV cameras installed, getting you from A to B safely.

Honesty is the Best Policy

One of our Southampton Hackney Association members,  Mr Yousafzai Riazkhan, was able to return a wallet containing a considerable amount of cash and several credit cards to a customer that had got into his taxi at Southampton Train Station.

The customer was extremely grateful with his honesty, giving our SHA member a well deserved reward.

This should promote a good image for the Taxi Trade in our City.

Well Done Mr Riazkhan!

Boat Show Taxi Rank

A temporary taxi rank has been established for the duration of the PSP Southampton Boat Show between 16th and 25th September.

The rank is on the eastern side of Western Esplanade to the rear of the Quays, immediately to the south of the gate, and will accommodate nine vehicles. The rank is signed from within the Boat Show site.

Please note that the Boat Show management has chosen not to provide a rank in Herbert Walker Avenue this year and that any licensed vehicle waiting in other areas will not be tolerated, particularly in the area in front of the Kuti’s Royal Thai Pier restaurant between Mayflower Park and Town Quay and on Harbour Parade adjacent to the Boat Show Main entrance.

Costa Luminosa visits Southampton Docks

The unplanned visit of the Costa Luminosa Italian cruise liner created extra work in Southampton today !

She should have docked in Dover but due to bad weather was diverted here.

We are fortunate that The Port can take ''surprise visits'' from ships that are due elsewhere.  This illustrates how versitile Associated British Ports can manage ship movements in a short space of time.

May the Costa line visit us again soon.
